Google Unveils Marshmallow
After months of speculation, Google finally unveiled the mysterious ‘M’ which stands for Marshmallow. I know that most of you have already guessed this name. But it’s nice to get the burden off our chest. Finally, Android 6.0 has a name and it is befitting the legacy of the Android nomenclature. For all those of who you have been thinking this update to be an extension of version 5, brace yourself for some major overhauling in the new OS because this is Android 6.0. The company has released the final Developer Preview update along with the official Android 6.0 SDK. After months of testing and much-needed improvements, Google has finally arrived at the final developer rendition of the OS. The launch of the new OS is planned sometime in October or November this year, so it was important to give developers a much-needed head-start to come up with apps that are compatible with Android Marshmallow.
James Eason, product manager at Google wrote
“Whether you like them straight out of the bag, roasted to a golden brown exterior with a molten center, or in fluff form, who doesn’t like marshmallows? We like them! Since the launch of the M Developer Preview at Google I/O in May, we’ve enjoyed all of your participation and feedback. Today with the final Developer Preview update, we’re introducing the official Android 6.0 SDK and opening Google Play for publishing your apps that target the new API level 23 in Android Marshmallow.” New features in this update include direct sharing between Android devices, as well as system-level support for fingerprint sensors.
Google has revealed the version name for the upcoming sixth version of Android with a new statue in front of its Mountain View, CA HQ. This has been the tradition and every Android OS has received a statue in front of the HQ.
